Google and IoT: the new life of Android Things

About three and a half years after the introduction of the project, dating back to the time of I / O 2015 (then it was called Project Brillo), we can say that the platform Android Things it has not yet been able to fully express its full potential. An initiative put in place by Google with the stated aim of supporting the development of solutions and the marketing of devices intended for the Internet of Things, based on low energy consumption hardware, able to communicate via Bluetooth LE, WiFi and through the Weave protocol. That's why the Mountain View group decided to fix the shot.

Android Things per i partner OEM

As we read in a shared post on the pages of the official blog, the operating system will be destined for more in the future partner OEM than to developers. A choice most likely made by bigG on the basis of the feedback collected so far and following the analysis of the results obtained from the debut to date. Although Android Things has helped to push interest in the IoT, we certainly cannot speak of a revolution triggered. As a result, the platform will no longer provide support for System-on-Modules (SoMs) based on components manufactured by NXP, Qualcomm and MediaTek in the future.

More precisely, the reference is to the NXP i.MX8M, Qualcomm SDA212, Qualcomm SDA624 and MediaTek MT8516 cards. The developers instead they will be able to continue to rely on compatibility with NXP Pico i.MX7D and Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, downloading the images for the hardware in question from the project console and distributing the updates in push mode for a maximum of 100 devices simultaneously in case of non-commercial uses. For companies that intend to allocate their products to the market, Google recommends turning to the Cloud IoT Core, the Cloud IoT Edge runtime and the Edge TPU development boards.

With I / O 2019 approaching at a brisk pace (it will be staged from 7 to 9 May), it is likely that we will soon know more about the new incarnation of Android Things and the Mountain View group's projects related to the IoT world. . A sector that finally seems ready to flex its muscles, after so many promises (often not kept), finding a right point of contact with the universe smart home and leveraging the use of standard protocols in order to avoid excessive fragmentation that would risk making the benefits offered by the technology itself useless.
