How to create a new Word template

If you want to learn how to make a template with Word on your PC, the first step you need to take is to start the program through its link in the Windows Start menu or in the MacOS Launchpad and start editing the worksheet by setting the features you prefer.

Then click with the right mouse button anywhere on the sheet and select the item Character from the menu that appears to select the font to be used by default instead of the standard Word font. You can choose the character type, Its size and apply effects such as crossed out, all uppercase etc. (although I don't think you want to make documents by default with all the text crossed out or formatted in some other particular way). Also, by clicking on the button Text effects (available on Windows only), you can set a filling or add one boundary to the typed text.

By moving to the board Advanced, then, you can set parameters such as character spacing. Once you have made all the desired changes, to save them, click on the button OK.

Now you need to customize all the other spreadsheet parameters. Then right click again anywhere in the document and select the item Paragraph give the menu to compare.

In the window that opens, use the menu Alignment to set the type of default alignment to be given to the text, the fields placed under the heading Re-enter to set the indents to the left and right of the text, the fields placed under the heading Spacing to set the spacing before and after the text, the pop-up menu Spacing to adjust the size of the leading, and so on.

Then move to the tab Text distribution and use the boxes in the latter to adjust the various settings of layout and choose if omit line numbers and disable the siballazione (feature I told you about in depth in my tutorial on how to spell in Word).

Also, I point out that by clicking on the button Tabs located at the bottom, you can adjust the tab stops of the document. I told you about it in more detail in my guide on how to tabulate in Word. When you have adjusted all your preferences, click on the button OK to save them.

Another thing you can do is change the sheet margins using the ruler tool, which can be enabled easily by going to the tab Show Word by clicking on the button Show and ticking the option Ruler. If you see fit, you can also create letterhead by inserting a logo and / or background into your document.

When you're done adjusting all the parameters of your spreadsheet, you're ready to turn the newly created document into a template. If you are using Windows, then click on the button Fillet located at the top left, select the item Save with name from the menu that appears and then choose the option Shop by Department that appears on the screen.

In the window that opens next, select Word template or Word 97-2003 template (if you want to create a template that is also perfectly compatible with Office versions prior to 2007) from the drop down menu Save As: this way, you will be automatically redirected to the path where the custom Word templates are saved (Documents> Custom Office Templates) and save your template by typing the name you want to give it in the field File name e clicking on your button Save.

Note: as you have surely noticed, the menus Character e Paragraph Word also have a button named Imposta eat predefined (bottom center) which, when clicked, allows you to use the current settings as Word defaults without having to create a new template. It is up to you to choose the path that you find most comfortable. However, I advise you to leave the default Word settings as they are and to act on a custom template created by you, to be recalled if necessary (as I have explained so far).

As already mentioned at the opening of the post (and as you probably already know), Word is also available in a Web based version that works directly from the browser and does not require subscription to work. It's free and you just need a Microsoft account to use it. It includes many functions of the classic Word for PC but, unfortunately, among these there are not those related to the creation or use of custom templates.

The only thing you can do with Word Online is to create a new document, customize it with the parameters of your interest and save it online on your OneDrive space (the Microsoft cloud storage service that Word Online relies on and which is available to all users with a Microsoft account ). Later, you can call it up from Word Online itself and use it as a basis for creating a new document.

To start creating a new document in Word Online, connected to the start page of the service, log in to your Microsoft account (if necessary) and select the item to create a new blank document. At this point, use the drop-down menu located at the top left to choose the writing character to use for your document, then right-click anywhere in the worksheet and select the item Paragraph from the menu that opens. A box will appear in which to adjust alignment, return e spacing.

Once you have adjusted all the parameters of your interest (you can also select the other Word tabs to set layout and other details), click on the item Fillet located at the top left and select the items Save As> Rename from the menu that opens to set a file name. Then return to the menu File> Save with nome and save the document on OneDrive by pressing on the item Save with name. Alternatively, if you want to download the document on your PC, click on the item Download a copy.

If you have saved the document on OneDrive, you can later recall it in Word Online using the function apri of the same. If you want, you can also create a file DOCX on your PC, save it to OneDrive and open it with Word Online, so you can use it as a template. To upload a file from your PC to OneDrive you can use the OneDrive folder present by default in Windows (assuming you have linked your user account to a Microsoft account) or you can connect to the OneDrive home page and drag it into the browser window. In any case, once you have edited the document in Word Online, remember to save it as a new document (by going to File> Save As> Save As) and be careful not to overwrite the file you used as a template.

Word is also available in the form of app for Android and iOS devices and is it completely free on all devices that have dimensions equal to or less than 10,1? (otherwise it requires the subscription to an Office 365 subscription, starting from 7 euros / month). Its functions are almost the same as Word Online and, in fact, even in this case there is the impossibility of creating or using personal templates. The only thing you can do is create a "basic" document, format it as you prefer, save it on the device memory or on one of the supported cloud services (OneDrive, Dropbox etc.) and recall it, if necessary, to use it as a template.

To create a new document in the Word app, install the latter on your device, start it and press on the item to create a blank document. At this point, recall the app toolbar by pressing the icon of arrow or on that ... located at the bottom right and scroll through the various options available to adjust writing character, dimensions, alignment, paragraph formatting etc.

When the operation is completed, press the icon with i three dots located at the top right and select the option Save with name from the menu that opens to save the file, which you can later recall from the card apri application and use as a template. If you want to use the file as a template, be sure to then select the option Save with name of the app and save the new document created with another name, otherwise you will overwrite the template file.

The same reasoning made for Word Online also applies to the Word app: you can create "templates" from your PC by creating normals file DOCX, uploading them to one of the cloud storage services supported by the app and then opening them in the latter, in order to use them as a template.
