How to get a resident to leave your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Island life is fun, but with limited space you can only have ten residents on your island. What if you want to change them? Maybe you don't like one of them very much, or maybe you want to bring someone new?

You can get a villager to leave the island, but there's no quick and easy way to do it. Instead, you'll invest in long-term passive aggression to get the job done for you.

How to remove a resident

Cold shoulder

The first thing you will need to do is stop talking to them. Normally, you should talk to your residents every day to help them know that you like having them on your island. If you want them to go, stop interacting with them.

Talk to them behind their backs

The special high school. Visit Isabelle at Resident Services. Select “Chat Resident” when speaking to them, then choose the Resident you want to get rid of. Do this daily, while ignoring the resident.

After a while, the resident will come and talk to you and ask you if they should leave. If you've changed your mind you can convince them to stay, if not tell them yes they should leave the island.

It may take a little while, depending on the level of relationship you have established with the resident. Newcomers will leave much faster than residents who have lived on the island for some time.
