This year's official F1 game sees the return of one of the most beloved features of the games, the split-screen multiplayer. In this mode, two players on one console can race with the screen split down the middle to allow both players to enjoy the race at the same time without the need for a full additional setup, a copy of the game and a connection via the Internet or local, networked play.
This is a feature that is seen less and less with the advent of online gaming as friends play more from their own homes. However, there are still games that offer cooperative gaming functionality, such as the Halo campaign series.
The return to F1 2020 is welcome. The mode is fairly limited in the sense that you can only play a standard race against each other, and the split-screen orientation is locked to a horizontal split, meaning it's harder to take advantage of the extra screen space on newer TVs that generally use a widescreen Orientation. That said, it's great to be able to play with friends in company again.
To start a split-screen multiplayer game, you can go to two areas. The first is in the Home tab of the main menu. If you select this option, the game will prompt the second player to save their controller input by pressing Start / Options / Enter. Once they have done that, you will be able to select each of the cars and drivers if available and then a track to race. Once loaded, you will play in split screen with friends, just like in the old days.
