IPhone 12 Pro Max review
After reviewing iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, I finally hold the most anticipated iPhone by 2020 in my hands and I can tell you about it after a few days of intense use, in which obviously I have compared it with mine. iPhone 11 Pro Max that has accompanied me so far. Among the "Pros" there is certainly the photographic sector - certainly professional - and the increased battery that allows us to never remain on foot. But let's take it easy.
What's new?
To "frame" it well, let's start by saying what's new in this iPhone 12 Pro Max compared to the 12 Pro and, in particular, compared to the previous model (iPhone 11 Pro Max) so that you can immediately guess if you whether or not to take the step forward.
Compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max the phone becomes slightly larger, with a display that goes from 6.5 "to a diagonal of 6.7 inches. However, I anticipate that the battery life - again compared to 11 Pro Max - has remained almost the same, with a use of 7 hours of screen on (really a lot, especially if you think that I used it to do stress tests and many videos / photos).
Always comparing it to the old model, obviously the big news is in the photographic sector. Here we first note one 5x optical zoom (against the 4x of 11 Pro Max), while the wide angle goes from 2x to 2.5x, allowing us to make really interesting photos without major quality losses. The digital zoom, on the other hand, reaches 12x.
But the real news is the video sector: in addition to what we already talked about for the innovations introduced by Apple, in the review of the iPhone 12 Pro regarding HDR and Dolby Vision, it must be said that the video quality is really excellent and stabilization is exceptional! I almost want to compare them to the stabilization of a high-end Action Cam.
Certainly, however, a drawback to mention is its handling, the weight of ben 226 grams combined with its larger proportions, it makes one-handed use almost impossible, despite being well distributed (the weight) and despite having the various iOS gestures to help us. In short, it is a smartphone to use with 2 hands, and if you are looking for something compact, then go for it iPhone 12 Pro.
Another difference compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max is its water resistance (soft, of course) which it now switches to 30 minutes up to 6 meters depth (compared to 4 meters of the 11 Pro Max).
Of course then there is compatibility with Apple MagSafe and the memory cuts start again from 128GB up to 512GB. But another important novelty is the larger photo sensor, which makes the really flawless shots, especially with HDR and in night shots. The only drawback is perhaps the shutter speed in Night Mode, which is still stopped at 30 seconds: it would be interesting to see what this sensor could do with exposures of 60 seconds or more.
In addition, the Night Mode, as also on the iPhone 12 Pro, is also extended to the front camera, allowing us to shoot brighter selfies even in low light conditions.
For the rest, "the same good old iPhone“, With excellent audio, excellent audio on call, no microphone or reception problems. Then there is also the 5G connectivity (even if I could not test it) which seems to be working really well (according to tests carried out by colleagues). The support remains dual SIM, which this time sees a nano SIM + one eSIM integrated.
Another novelty in the photographic sector is the presence of LIDAR sensor which improves and perfects the focus, even and especially during videos. This allows you to not only have a faster and more precise focus, but especially in videos it avoids those continuous focus dancers that - for a professional use - is a great leap forward!
Among other things, speaking of professional use, Apple has introduced in the photographic sector, the possibility of taking pictures in Apple RAW (a proprietary RAW therefore) that takes pictures without loss of quality and therefore without software intervention, in order to be edited in post production starting from a virgin file. However at the moment it is not yet active but will come with a software update.
Conclusion and Prices
Such high prices deserve very important conclusions for this device. The new iPhone 12 Pro Max is, as always, a great device, definitely one of the best camera-phone on the market.
However, it must be considered that some of its competitors have introduced much more irrepressible zooms (up to 50x even) and its handling / weight is certainly not a strong point.
The charger is also missing, and not only on the new iPhone 12 but also by purchasing an old model (iPhone 11). But these are choices and I am not here to discuss, also because there is support for MagSafe which seems to be an interesting novelty.
