How to tame foxes in Minecraft

Unlike wolves and ocelots, you can't just bribe a fox to become your friend with food. They will gladly accept sweet berries, but they won't trust you just because you have food. Instead, you will have to breed two wild foxes and tame the much more gullible child. Just give two foxes some sweet berries and let nature take its course. Once a baby fox is produced, it will be loyal to you. The problem is, the young fox will always want to follow his parents.

This is where arguably the cruelest aspect of taming the Minecraft fox comes in. To claim the baby fox as your own you will have to separate the poor man from his parents or he will continue to follow them. You are going to need a drive for this part. Simply tie the yarn to the baby fox and take it home with you. Now you have your own pet fox in Minecraft! If you don't have a lead, you can still craft one using four ropes and a ball of mud. Prospects also have a decent chance of spawning in chests, and stray traders will have some that you can 'borrow'.

To recap, here's how to tame a fox in Minecraft:

  1. Get up close to two wild foxes while crouching
  2. Give each fox sweet berries to breed them
  3. Wait for a baby fox to be produced
  4. Attach a leash to the baby fox and take it with you

Where to find foxes

Minecraft foxes are available in two colors: red and white. The red variety is found in taiga biomes, while the arctic white variety breeds in snowy taiga biomes. They're one of the only nighttime monsters in Minecraft, so you'll have a much easier time discovering them at night. During the day, they tend to look for shady places to sleep. Keep this in mind that you are looking for it during daylight hours. At night, foxes sometimes go to villages if there is one nearby, so these are also good places to check out.
