Notes created with iOS 15 and macOS 12 are not available in earlier versions of the operating system

Among the new features in iOS 15 and macOS Monterey, Apple has made some changes to its Notes app. However, if you have already installed the latest versions of the operating systems on your devices, please note that some notes will not appear on older versions of iOS or macOS.

Updates to the Notes application make it more advanced for group collaboration and also make it easier to organize and search for notes. For example, users can now mention other people in shared notes anywhere in the text using the @ sign and collaborator name.

Apple has also finally added support for tags, so you can add tags to text and then find it easily via a new interface to search for tagged notes. However, you may not use these features for a while if you still have devices running older versions of the operating system.

If the Notes app detects a device in your iCloud account that is running prior to iOS 14.5 or macOS Big Sur 11.3, it will warn you that the marked notes or mentions will not be available on those devices. Interestingly, the latest versions of iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur are only partially compatible with these features.

Both iOS 15 and macOS Monterey are currently available in beta for developers and registered users of the Apple Beta Software Program. Final versions of these updates are scheduled for this fall.
