How to beat Heavenly Punisher in Persona 5 Strikers

The battle with the Heavenly Punisher is tough, but it's not impossible to win. Focusing on basic weaknesses and crowd control are the keys to success. Here are the basic things you need to do to win:

  • Bring Joker, Ryuji, Yusuke and Morgana
  • Use Zio and Eiha to strike at enemy weakness
  • Defeat support enemies as soon as they appear
  • Use Yusuke's meter to deal massive damage
  • Use Dia de Morgana's ability to heal if needed
  • Baton Pass as many as you can to refill your Showtime meter

The tips above are just a general rundown of what needs to be done to win the fight. Keep reading below for more tips and strategies.

Bring in the right party members to tackle basic weaknesses

You can bring your favorite Phantom Thieves into the fight if you want to, but it's much easier if you bring the right teammates.

Heavenly Punisher is just another name for the Archangel persona, so it is weak electric et curse skills. Ryuji is your best bet for electrical skills, and Joker is the only member of the party with curse skills. Just make sure you don't get rid of Arsene yet, otherwise you'll have to take a trip to the Velvet room to get it back so you can use Eiha.

Get out of prison to regain SP

You can't hit your character's elemental weaknesses if you don't have enough SP. At this point in the game, you probably don't have too many SP salvage items. Leaving prison and returning to the real world fully recovers HP and SP for everyone in the party, so take a break from the cognitive world and return to Leblanc to regain your stamina.

To leave the prison, simply head to any checkpoint you have visited. There is a checkpoint just before the boss battle area. It's marked on your map with a green C icon, so it's pretty hard to miss. Just get out of the jail and come back inside to collect all of your HP and SP. Then just keep SP as you make your way to the boss arena.

Learn the attack patterns

The Heavenly Punisher has five main attacks that you will need to watch out for. Three of them are persona attacks, while two are just standard physical attacks. Each of them is listed below.

  • Makouha - The Celestial Punisher sends you returning orbs. Keep moving to dodge them.
  • Maps - The Celestial Punisher creates three white circles on the ground. Avoid them to avoid sustaining damage.
  • Vajra Blast - The Heavenly Punisher rises in the air and crashes. Flee to avoid taking damage.
  • Sword swings - Sometimes the heavenly punisher will swing his sword. Keep an eye on yourself and be ready to dodge.
  • To dive - The Heavenly Punisher will sometimes float backwards before charging forward. Flee to avoid the attack.

You will be able to tell when Makouha, Mapsi, and Vajra Blast are about to perform, as their names will appear on the screen above Heavenly Punisher. His Sword Swings and Dive attacks won't have any obvious clues, so you will just have to watch them and be ready to dodge.

Yusuke's counter is very effective against bosses

If you use your elemental attacks, you are going to run out of SP during this fight. Fortunately, Yusuke has a fantastic ability that doesn't require any SP. By pressing the Triangle button (on PS4 at least), Yusuke will prepare to counter an incoming physical attack.

Simply press Triangle when the Celestial Punisher is about to swing his sword or dive towards you. If you time him correctly, Yusuke will perform a powerful slash that will make a big dent in the enemy's health bar. However, you cannot counter Makouha, Mapsi, or Vajra Blast, so you should always avoid them so you don't get hurt.

Baton passes give you faster show time

During this fight, you should frequently switch between Joker, Ryuji, and Yusuke. Not only for using their elemental abilities, but also because using a Baton Pass will allow your Showtime gauge to fill up faster. It won't work if you spam the switch button, but if you swap characters at a decent pace, you'll have everyone's Showtime attacks in no time. Using a Showtime attack is an easy way to rack up damage, and they can really help during this fight.

If you apply all of the tips above, then the Heavenly Punisher should fall in no time. Some of his attacks can be quite difficult to dodge, but luckily you can start over from the start of the battle without any penalties if you die. You can also change party members and use items before starting the fight again, which helps a lot. Once the fight is over, you can continue through Shibuya Prison.
