How to get a shiny Ho-Oh with an earthquake

Niantic has hosted celebrations for a number of different generations, including the Johto Celebration event which kicked off this week. This follows both the Hoenn Collection Challenge and the celebration event's timed search last week, the latter rewarding people with a Hurricane-aware Rayquaza.

As part of the Johto Celebration event, Niantic is integrating Team GO Rocket with Timed Research, which you can read more about in our guide on this topic. The big reward for completing the timed search for the Johto Celebration Event is not just a Ho-Oh, but one who knows the exclusive Earthquake movement. That's not all, because it's also the best chance of catching a shiny Ho-Oh.

Shinies in Pokémon GO are certainly more common than in the main games, but that doesn't make them any easier to find. It's all about luck, as there are some opportunities where the chances of shine are higher than others, such as during Pokémon GO Fest. When Ho-Oh was raiding recently, you could get a shine, but it took a lot of raiding for most people to have a chance at one.

While you only get one attempt this time around for completing the Johto Celebration Event Timed Search, the odds of getting a Shiny Ho-Oh are higher than ever. This is because Pokémon obtained through special research have an increased shine rate. The only downside is that you only get one chance to do this compared to the possibility of raid over and over again otherwise. Either way, it's definitely a good chance to get a Ho-Oh with exclusive move and maybe even shine.
