The 10 Best Villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The 10 Best Villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The villagers in Animal Crossing games are an important part of the gameplay. They add life and color to the otherwise quiet town, or in this case, the island. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, there are almost 400 villagers in total. Since there can only be 10 villagers living on the island at a time, there are some who are better than others.

Deciding which villagers are better depends largely on your opinion of them. Each player will have their favorite villagers based on arbitrary and personal qualities and opinions. For example, Marshal is a very popular villager who has maintained this popularity for over five years now for no other reason than the cute appearance and the smug personality type combination seems to resonate with gamers.

There are no statistics to speak of, just the appearance, the personality and sometimes the style of decoration. The decision on social media and the price of the Amiibo card on eBay was a determining factor. Not all expensive cards were popular characters, but popular characters always had expensive cards.

Best Villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Certain types of villagers stand out. There are eight personality types, four for village women and four for men. Most popular male characters have "smug" or "grumpy" gentleman personalities, while female characters are gaining popularity with the most "snooty" or "normal" personalities. The species also affects popularity. Most of the popular characters are wolves, deer or cats. There are some unique designs, such as Merengue or Julian, which have a lot of fans because of their creative personality and looks.

In New Horizons, players start with two villagers. These two villagers are limited to the sister personality and the jock personality, which are not the most wanted personalities and do not appear on the list. Top Villagers, based almost solely on popularity and demand due to the subjective nature of the topic, haven't changed significantly since the games started.

1. Marshal the squirrel

The marshal is the undisputed king of the villagers. First introduced in New Leaf, it has been at the top of the popularity chart for years and is coveted by many fans. Marshal is a cream colored squirrel with the smug personality type. He's inclined to talk about his freshness or superiority in certain contexts, but he's friendly with the player. His popularity probably stems from the fact that smug personalities will sometimes flirt with the player. Marshal is so popular that his Amiibo card can reach triple digits on auction sites.

The best villager is, of course, pure opinion. The Marshal is perhaps the most popular villager, but we were disappointed to find him crouching in our campsite for literal days before having to invite him. Each player will have their own wishlist of villagers they hope to collect for the island of their dreams.
