WoW Classic Wailing Caverns - Quests, Locations & Bosses

World of Warcraft Classic's first non-linear dungeon, Wailing Caverns, can be quite difficult for new players to navigate. It is easy to move around, haphazardly and get lost in its twisty and crossed areas. So be sure to get your bearings with this guide before you and your crew venture into the depths of this dangerous place.

Recommended classes and levels

  • Thieves and Mages are a great choice for this dungeon given the large number of humanoid mobs. Druids aren't a bad idea either as they can use certain abilities to deal damage to many enemies at once.
  • Shamans can counter CC which will be frequently used by enemies and bosses in the dungeon with their Quake Totem.
  • Bring a warrior with a shield to tank a large number of enemies.
  • Priests can also dispel the sleep effects that are all over this dungeon at level 18.

Regardless of your class, the recommended levels for Wailing Caverns are 17-24, but at the lower end of that range it can be quite difficult to pass.

Location

You can find the entrance to this dungeon in The Barrens, southwest of The Crossroads.

Start at the north side of the Oasis where you will find a large rock formation that leads to a cave. Head inside and take a right at the first intersection, then a left, and you'll come to an area of shallow water. Continue straight to follow the curved tunnel until you come to a large cave, full of tall plants and a pond of water. Follow the path that goes down to your right and you will meet the entrance to the dungeon.

quests

There are a handful of quests that deal with the Wailing Cave, most starting outside the dungeon and one inside.

Quests starting outside

We recommend that you take all of these quests before heading into the dungeon to be as efficient as possible.

Horde only

Fang leaders - collect a gem from each of the four Leaders of the Fang in the dungeon. You must complete the Tonga Runetotem questline and be level 10 to get this quest.
Serpentbloom - collect 10 Serpentbloom in the dungeon. Granted by Apothecary Zamah and requires level 14.

Neutral quests

Deviated eradication - Kill 7 Deflected Ravager, Deflected Viper, Deflected Shambler and Deflected Dreadfang. Picked up above the cave entrance and requires level 15.
Deflect the skins - Collect 20 deflection skins from instance waste. Picked up above the cave entrance and requires level 13.
Smart drinks - collect 6 portions of Essence of Wailing. Granted by Mebok Mizzyrix in Ratchet and requires level 13.
Problem at the docks - collect the Mad Magglish 99 Year Old Port bottle from the Wailing Caverns. Given by Crane Operator Bigglefuzz in Ratchet and requires level 14.

The quest began inside

There is only one quest that starts inside the dungeon and it is available to both factions:

The luminous glow - it forces you to find someone in Ratchet who can tell you more about the Glowing Shard. You'll need to take the shard to Sputtervalve in Ratchet, then head to Falla Sagewind, which is on top of the mountain that covers the Wailing Caverns. Stripped of Mutanus the Devourer and requires level 15.

Locations in the dungeon

Since the dungeon is not linear, it can be difficult to navigate through its location. If you follow the path below, you will have a much easier time going through it and completing everything you need to:

  1. Follow the winding path from the entrance to a cave crossed by a river.
  2. Fight the first boss, Lady Anacondra, who can appear in any torch ring at the top of the cave.
  3. After the fight, enter the river and head to the west side of the instance. Follow the winding path until you reach Lord Cobrahn, the second boss.
  4. After defeating him, descend the cliff in front of the boss, using the small ledge to help you fall. Go up the river to the east side of the instance.
  5. You will find Kresh in the river. Kill him, even if his status is neutral.
  6. Continue east until you reach Lord Pythas.
  7. After killing him, keep heading east and you'll reach Skum. This is an optional boss, but we recommend doing it because it's pretty easy.
  8. After jumping or beating Skum, continue until you reach Lord Serpentis and Verdan and then Everliving in the same room. Face Serpentis first, then Verdan.
  9. After completing both fights, use the shortcut behind Verdan to return to the river. Just fall off the cliff and fall into the water.
  10. Return to the entrance of the dungeon and speak with the disciple of Naralex. You will then escort them to the final boss, Mutanus the Devourer.

Patterns

Here is a list of all the bosses you will face in the dungeon:

Lady Anacondra

The first boss in the dungeon is a level 20 elite humanoid. She can appear in one of the torch circles at the top of the cave she is in.

Eliminate the enemies around her before pulling her towards you. Be aware of his sleep and dispel it whenever you can. Other than that, the fight is pretty straightforward.

The second boss is another elite level 20 humanoid. This boss is pretty straightforward throughout. There isn't a single mechanic you should worry about with this guy.

Kresh

The first optional boss is neutral unless you choose to attack it. We don't recommend taking it unless you have a tank shield character.

The third boss in the dungeon is a level 21, you guessed it: elite humanoid.

You'll want to search for the boss that casts Healing Touch and interrupt it. Also avoid his Thunderclap attack if you are a ranged character.

The second optional boss is a level 21 elite beast that will cast Chained Bolt. The attack will deal area damage, but it's minor enough that you don't really have to worry about it and heal yourself.

Lord Serpentis

He is the fourth boss of the dungeon and also the last boss of the fangs. He's a level 21 elite humanoid. Just like with Anacondra, watch out for his sleep attack, which must be dispelled as soon as possible or removed by a shaman's shake totem.

The fifth boss in Wailing Caverns is also decently more difficult than the other bosses you've fought before him. He is a level 21 elite elemental.

Verdan has a lot of health that you will need to deplete. This means that your DPS characters will have to work quickly to remove it before your healers run out of mana. It won't be an easy feat as Verdan deals a lot more damage than Fang's bosses.

His melee attacks are the main thing to watch out for. They can deal a ton of damage, even to warriors with tank shields. He can also perform a stomp attack that deals area and root damage to affected players. Ranged players should stay clear of these attacks.

The final dungeon boss will be triggered when you try to awaken Naralex. This is an elite level 22 Murloc.

In addition to the boss, there will be waves of additions that you will have to face as you fight. Some players will be affected by a Naralex's Nightmare attachment, which will put them to sleep. They need to be attacked to break it. He can also use Thundercrack to strike players from a distance.
