The release of new smartphones from Samsung's Galaxy S range is one of the major events in the Android mobile market and often sets the tone for the rest of the year. Between their new design and the technical improvements they embed, the Galaxy S22 are no exception to the rule.

Samsung could also change the names of some models this year to better distinguish them. Indeed, a leak announces that Samsung would like to rename the Galaxy S22 + to Galaxy s22 Pro, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra to Galaxy Note 22 Ultra. The latter would inherit the name Note because of the integrated stylus and its more angular design than its predecessors. Another leak also announces that Samsung has finally chosen the name Galaxy S22 Note.

? When is the Samsung Galaxy S22 coming out?

Samsung would finally present the Galaxy S22 in February 2022, one month behind the Galaxy S21. Leaker Jon Prosser has also unveiled that the Korean giant will present the three smartphones on February 8. Pre-orders would be spread over 10 days, and smartphones would then be available in stores on February 18. The firm would like to reserve the January slot for the Galaxy S21 FE. Samsung expects sales to rise and expects 33 million units sold next year.

? What is the price of the Galaxy S22?

As in previous years, three different models are expected: the Galaxy S22, S22+ et S22 Ultra. For its Galaxy S21, Samsung had curbed the crazy price hike affecting premium smartphones in an attempt to convince the public to turn to its devices. Here are the prices of the Galaxy S22 estimated on the basis of the price of the S21:

  • Galaxy S22: from 859 euros
  • Galaxy S22 +: from 1059 euros
  • Galaxy S22 Ultra: from 1259 euros

Samsung, however, plans to increase the prices of the Galaxy S22 compared to the previous generation. Indeed, theThe Galaxy S22 would be sold from $ 899, compared to $ 799 for the Galaxy S21. In your country, its price should therefore be around 1000 euros. The culprit is probably the shortage of components, especially semiconductors. This makes the manufacturing costs of smartphones soar, and therefore this increase is certainly reflected in the final price of the products. To reduce the cost of production, Samsung would again ignore the microSD port.

Different configurations would be available for each model. The Galaxy S22 will be available in Rose Gold, Green, Black and White. At least two different configurations will be offered, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage or 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. On the Galaxy S22 + side, the smartphone will be available in same colors and same configurations. The Galaxy S22 Ultra, or Galaxy S22 Note, will be offered in Dark Red, Black and White. Three configurations will be available: 12 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage as well as a third configuration with no less than 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage.

? What does the Galaxy S22 look like?

The first echoes point to a design similar to Galaxy S21. The new generation of Samsung mobiles should not take advantage of the front camera under the screen, introduced for the first time by the brand with its folding, the Galaxy Z Fold 3. This information was also confirmed at the end of November when photos stolen screen protectors have appeared on the web.

The screen of the Galaxy S22 and S22 + is expected to use LTPS (low temperature poly-silicon) technology and is said to be smaller than that of their predecessors. We are talking about a 6,06 inch diagonal for the S22 (against 6,2 inches on the S21) and 6,55 inches for the S22 + (against 6,7 inches on the S21 +). the S22 Ultra would be entitled to a by the LTPO (low temperature polycrystalline oxide) of 6,81 inches, much like the S21 Ultra (6,8 inches).

It is therefore clear that the Galaxy S22 does not really revolutionize the design of the range. Its photo block is very similar to that of its predecessor, although its sensor is in theory more efficient. The only real novelty: the side buttons are placed lower than usual.

Each smartphone in the series would benefit from a screen supporting a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Only the Galaxy S22 Ultra would offer display quality QHD+ 1440p, the other two references being satisfied with a classic definition FHD + 1080p.

Note that the Galaxy S22 Ultra has a rear photo unit with a very strange design. The smartphone looks like the Galaxy Note, but the sensor's appearance is clearly not to everyone's liking. Taking the shape of a P, it has 3 sensors arranged vertically, while a fourth is on the side. An unknown module is also present.

However, this design is not yet final. Another rendering was released a few days later. In addition, the medium offers another design for the photo block, this time split in half.

Samsung could even opt for an even more interesting third design, since this would remove the protrusion of the photo unit. Samsung would also consider placing the sensors directly on the back of the smartphone in the form of “drops of water”. This new design would be perfect to minimize the weight of the smartphone, since the mass of the photo module would thus be replaced by that of the new S Pen. It is obviously for this design that Samsung would have opted, according to the latest renderings.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra will most likely be compatible with the stylet S-Pen, as was the case with the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Some sources even claim that the release of the flagship will mark the definitive death of the Galaxy Note, already in bad shape since the release of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and its dedicated S-Pen. The Galaxy S22 Ultra will offer an integrated stylus like the previous Note. New renderings also showed what the location for the stylus with shells might look like, in addition to confirming the flagship's design again.

Stolen photos have confirmed the latest speculation about the design of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, this one no longer has any secrets. We find a screen similar to that of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, an original photo module with the sensors placed on the back of the smartphones as well as the S-Pen at the bottom of the smartphone.

Side colors, Samsung would have decided to decline each model of the range in 4 colors. The S22 and the S22 + would be entitled to these 4 colors: Black, Green, Rose Gold and White. The S22 Ultra would be offered in Black, Dark Red, Green and White.

? What performance for the Galaxy S22?

The smartphones of the Galaxy S range have the particularity of not being based on the same chips depending on the market in which they are released. Samsung designs its own Exynos SoCs, which can be found on mobiles sold in Europe and around the world, but is also supplied with Snapdragon chips from Qualcomm to equip devices intended for the United States or China. A difference in treatment that is felt in the performance and autonomy of the phones.

But in 2022, Samsung's balance between Snapdragon and Exynos should be upset. The manufacturer is plagued by production difficulties. The release of the Galaxy S21 FE had to be postponed for this reason, and the number 1 smartphone market would not be in the capacity to produce enough Exynos 2200 chips to cover its usual needs.

The Galaxy S22 should therefore benefit from a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC in most markets, only a few countries retaining an Exynos SoC (the 2200 in this case). This would be particularly the case in Europe. A priori, South Korea would switch to Snapdragon, we do not yet know if this will be the case for your country. Bad timing for Samsung, which intended to compete with Qualcomm on the high-end chip market in 2022 with a GPU Exynos boosted by AMD's RDNA 2 architecture. As a reminder, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was announced on December 1 by Qualcomm. This is the SoC that will replace the Snapdragon 888.

However, the presence of the Exynos chip in Samsung's flagships for 2022 has been questioned by Super Roader, a former Samsung employee who has been converted into a Youtubeur. According to him, Samsung would rely exclusively on the SoC Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 on its Galaxy S22, because the manufacturer would not have been convinced by the performance of the prototypes. It could therefore be that we see the Exynos 2200 arrive on other devices, including laptops.

In any case, the first benchmarks of the Samsung Galaxy S22 which appeared on the net were made on a Snapadron 8 Gen 1. A benchmark carried out on Geekbench also leaves some concern. The terminal is much less powerful than a flagship equipped with a Snapdragon 888 and an iPhone 13 under the A15 Bionic chip. However, you have to keep in mind that this is only a preliminary benchmark and things should change by the time the smartphone is released.

The brand would also have drawn a line on improving the cooling system of its devices. Samsung was developing a steam chamber to handle the heat given off by the Galaxy S22, but the project was finally abandoned, because it was considered too expensive. We should therefore find a cooling technology similar to that used on the Galaxy S21, which tend to heat up during gaming sessions.

On the RAM side, Samsung unveiled new LPDDR5X DRAM chips, which promise speeds of up to 8,5 Gbps, or more than 1,3 times the 6,4 Gbps speed of LPDDR5 from last year. She also consumes 20% less energy thanks to his new 14 nm engraving. This new RAM technology could be used for the first time in the Galaxy S22.

? What is the autonomy of the Galaxy S22?

After several years of criticism regarding the autonomy of its premium smartphones, Samsung had somewhat rectified the situation with the Galaxy S21 series, in particular by increasing the capacity of the batteries. But it seems that the manufacturer is taking a step back this time. If the autonomy of the Galaxy s22 ultra should be entrusted to a 5000 mAh battery, as on the S21 Ultra, the Galaxy S22 and S22 + would be equipped with a battery of 3700 and 4600 mAh respectively, against 4000 and 4800 mAh on the previous generation.

In return, Samsung could finally improve the wired charging speed of its devices, still stuck at 25W so far, while the competition has been democratizing 65W on the high end for some time now. After unsuccessful attempts to recharge 65W, Samsung would have fallen back on recharging 45W. A new charger would be on the program.

The S22, S22 + and S22 Ultra will also be compatible with induction charging and reverse wireless charging. Note that Samsung will use the same supplier as for the Galaxy Note 7 batteries. This does not mean that the flagship is heading straight for disaster. Indeed, several smartphones of the firm are already equipped with batteries manufactured by ATL.

? Is the Galaxy S22 good in photos?

Like the Galaxy S21 and S21 +, the Galaxy S22 and S22 + will share the same photo configuration. The Ice Universe leaker shared the exact photo configuration of the smartphones several months before their launch. The main sensor would go from 12 to 50 MP, and it would be the new ISOCELL GN5 sensor that Samsung introduced this year. At 1 / 1.57 inch in size with an f / 1.8 aperture and individual 1 micron pixels, it is the largest sensor Samsung has used on its Galaxy Ss so far, outside of the Ultra models.

It would be accompanied by a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle sensor (identical to the previous generation), opening at f / 2.55. As confirmed by the Ice Universe leaker, we would also find a 10 MP telephoto lens (against 64 MP on the S21) of 1 / 3.94 inches which opens at f / 2.4. It would offer up to 3x optical zoom, whereas it was only hybrid on their predecessors. As a reminder, the telephoto lens of the Galaxy S21 only allowed an optical zoom of 1.1X.

On the selfie side, we should find the same 10 MP sensor that Samsung used on its Galaxy S21. It is a sensor measuring 1 / 3.24 inches, which offers an aperture of f / 2.2 and individual pixels of 1,22 microns. As a reminder, the Korean giant has been using 10 MP sensors since the 10 Galaxy S2021, so it is hoped that the next generation will adopt the same 40 MP sensor from the Ultra model throughout the series.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is not expected to change much, retaining a main lens of 108 MP (and not the 200 MP lens that Samsung has worked on). This should not also be a revolution compared to the ISOCELL HM3 of the Galaxy S21 Ultra, since it would be called HM3s and not HM4. It would be 1 / 1,33 inch, have photosites of 0,8 μm, and offer an 85-degree field of view.

Samsung would add a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor (f / 2,2) of 1 / 2,55 inches with photosites of 1,4 μm and a field of view of up to 120 degrees. A third telephoto sensor (10x) of 10 megapixels (f / 4,9) with a size of 1 / 3,52 inches with photosites of 1,12 μm and fields of view of 11 degrees would be on the program. Finally, the brand would complete this set up with another 3 megapixel x10 telephoto lens which would stand out with a 36-degree field of view and an f / 2,4 aperture.

? Galaxy S22 : quelle version d'Android ?

Samsung is much more responsive than a few years ago when it comes to upgrading its in-house overlay to the most recent version of Android and continues to do well. The Galaxy S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra will be upgraded to Android 12 by the end of 2021. This gives us good hope that the S22, S22 + and S22 Ultra will ship directly to Android 12 rather than Android 11 with an update to come to Android 12.

It should also be remembered that Samsung is now promising three-year software monitoring on its smartphones, therefore with updates to features that should be deployed up to Android 15.
