How to find and assess fossils in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The fossils are Blathers (the owner of the museum) favorite additions to his collection. Every time you put in a new one, its face lights up, but how do you find new fossils and rate the ones Blathers doesn't yet have?

Find fossils

If Blathers has not yet come to your island, you must donate more creatures
(five in total) to Tom Nook before they can start finding fossils, because that's him
which gives you the DIY shovel recipe.

Finding fossils is always a snap. You can find fossils on your
island digging with a Leather wherever you see cracks in the
ground. There will be a few around your island, although some
pole vault and ladder to reach.

New cracks will appear every day with new fossils to find. You can
also find fossils on your Nook Miles trips! Keep an eye out for the islands that you
travel to.

Evaluate your
found with Blathers

While every fossil you find takes up a place in your inventory,
you have no way of knowing which fossils you have found until you get them
evaluated.

If you bring these fossils to Blathers, you have the option of
evaluate them. The fossil element will be named after which dinosaur it was and
what part of the skeleton it was. For example: Triceratops Skull.

It will appear in your inventory along with an abbreviated version of this
phrase, like Tricera Skull.

Once your fossil is assessed, if this is an item that Blathers does
not yet, you can donate it to the museum. If he does, you can keep him or
sell it at the store.

Keep in mind if you are planning to sell, that different fossils are selling
for different amounts.
