What's new for macOS Monterey?
As explained above, the big novelties are quite few. Two of them were even postponed. Fortunately, there are a lot of small details that change on macOS Monterey.
Shortcuts is on Mac!
- The Shortcuts application : it will eventually replace Automator, Raccourcis is the application of iOS and iPadOS, they offer automations to perform several tasks.
FaceTime with your colleagues on PC and Android
- FaceTime : you can isolate the background sound to highlight your voice (Voice isolation mode), or create a portrait mode in real time if you have a Mac with an M1 chip. For all Macs, you will now be able to invite your contacts on Windows and Android to join a video call. There's even calendar integration so you can schedule your next FaceTime calls.
You can link tabs in groups easily on Safari
- Safari : the tab menu has been redesigned to be able to create new groups, which are synchronized with your other Apple devices. The address bar has also been made more compact. There is also a new Tracking Prevention feature to prevent trackers from retrieving your real IP (in the Cloud Private Relay feature).
- Mail : you can now your email to your destination, Apple is able to create an automatic forwarding address to hide your email.
You can share the screen or content from your iPhone to your Mac
- AirPlay arrive sur Mac : You can now share content from your iPhone or iPad to nearby Macs, and vice versa.
- Text detection in Photos (LiveText) : The Photos app can detect texts in photos, which can isolate and select phone numbers, addresses, links to web pages or other text.

- Apple Plans Apple's Maps app might not be as useful on Mac as it is on iPhone, but it still has some cool new features. You can browse Apple's new interactive globe; explore cities in 3D detail, get traffic reports, as well as real-time transport information. If you're trying to part ways with Google, now Maps can be a solid alternative.
- Messages : Links, images and other content exchanged in Messages are now combined in the new Shared with you section of the corresponding app (Photos, Safari, Apple News, Apple Podcasts and the Apple TV app). If you open the Photos app, for example, you'll find all the photos received through Messages. Note that if you receive a bunch of photos, they now come as a collage or stack, making them easy to navigate.
Concentration mode can be configured on iPhone, iPad and Mac
- Concentration : this mode is also available on iOS and iPadOS 15 which allows you to let only the desired notifications pass in order to focus all your attention to move forward at full speed / or quietly watch a movie for example.
You can create notes on the fly
There are many small and medium novelties to discover. By hovering your mouse over the lower right corner of the screen, you will be able to create a quick note. Moreover, the Notes application also includes labels to find your notes more easily. Another example: battery management was received on laptops, with an energy saving mode. We also did not mention Split View, a function for managing windows (long press on the button towards the top left of the window).
SharePlay is not yet available
Some of the key features announced at WWDC 2021 have been delayed, these are SharePlay. SharePlay allows you to simultaneously share media with friends via FaceTime. You can all watch a show or movie together, listen to a song at the same time, or watch someone's screen. The functionality is perfect for movie nights or enjoying an album release, for example.
Universal Control makes switching from a Mac to an iPad very easy
Same observation for Universal Control, a new feature that lets you control your Mac or iPad by moving the cursor from device to device. Come on, you can use the iPad to move the cursor on the Mac, or use the Mac's trackpad to control the iPad. It will also allow you to drag files between devices.

What is our opinion on macOS Monterey?
At first glance, it's a slight update from Big Sur. However, this update contains many changes that make the OS easier and more convenient to use, especially if you have an iPhone and / or an iPad.
One of the main novelties is Universal Control, which lets you control multiple Apple devices - such as a desktop Mac, MacBook laptop, and iPad - with a single mouse (or trackpad) and keyboard. A function which is addressed to few people, those and those who work on a Mac AND an iPad, or two Macs… rather special cases of use. Unfortunately, this feature will arrive a bit later this year.
Finally, for us, the most interesting feature is the arrival of shortcuts on Mac. The app will eventually replace Automator and is especially powerful for business users who can use the app's library of predefined commands to initiate key productivity commands and perform many repetitive tasks.
You will definitely use LiveText. It's Apple's AI magic at work, and it works well. For example, I can highlight text from a sheet I just took a photo to extract the text in seconds. This can be very convenient and save you time when taking notes.
