Sony A7C: the compact mirrorless

A lot has changed since the full-frame mirrorless front is no longer Sony's exclusive business. For example, Canon, Panasonic and Nikon have created models with full-frame but compact sensors, suitable for non-professional audiences but looking for something more than APS-C, Micro Four Thirds or even smaller sensors.

Therefore, Sony also wanted to make the effort to reduce the size of the camera body while maintaining sensore full-frame and some higher-end features. From this concept it was born Sony A7C. Going into more detail we find many features of the A7 series inserted in a body of the A6000 series. And here we find the first surprise: viewfinder moved to the left and no attempt to emulate a pentaprism. The result is a camera that is reminiscent of a rangefinder camera, but which is actually a concentrate of technology.

Sony A7C: the technical characteristics

The new Sony A7C is, at the time of writing, the smallest full-frame mirrorless in the world, but nevertheless it packs a lot of technology inside. The sensor is 24,2 million pixel back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS next to which the latest processor works BIONZ X. This combination, already tested at Sony, guarantees the new A7C a dynamic range of 15 stops, high resolution and processing speed. Furthermore, even the tightness at high sensitivity is a strong point of this new mirrorless which can count on an ISO range that reaches the maximum value of 51.000 ISO. In expanded mode, however, it ranges from 50 to 204.800 ISO. The A7C also supports 14-bit RAW format and 16-bit image processing.

The compact body measures 124 × 71,1 × 59,7mm and weighs just 509 grams, practically the same weight as the A6600. Inside we find a renewed 5-axis stabilization system and a new shutter. These features, together with the monocoque structure, made it possible to create such a light camera.

Sony A7C: advanced autofocus

Artificial intelligence is also increasingly present in cameras, on this model, in fact, we find the Real-Time Tracking mode that helps the photographer to keep focus. Keeping the shutter button pressed halfway Sony A7C will always keep the subject in focus. Furthermore, with the “Touch Tracking” function we will be able to choose the subject to focus directly from the touch display, whether we are photographing or shooting a video. Among the various autofocus modes there is also the one dedicated to the eyes, both human and animal.

The AF system is based on a 693-point phase-detection module on the focal plane, approximately 93% of the framed area, and on contrast detection with 425 points.

With the active AF system, Sony A7C also allows you to shoot bursts up to 10 frames per second, taking advantage of the capabilities of the new shutter. In Live View mode we can also shoot non-stop up to 8 fps with no display lag. Sony A7C allows in total to shoot up to 223 JPEG, 115 compressed RAW or 45 uncompressed RAW images in a single burst. All this while always relying on the precision of its AF system.

The video sector

Today's cameras are increasingly hybrid instruments, capable of photographing but also recording videos of excellent quality. Sony A7C is also no exception, which with Full pixel reading in full-frame without pixel binning allows you to record twice the data needed for 4K video. These are oversampled to generate high-quality, detail-rich 4K video. Sony A7C supports HDR and S-Log / S-Gamut profiles, can count on Slow & Quick Motion mode and record up to 120 fps in full HD.

The swiveling and side-opening display allows you to manage shots with ease, even when we are recording a vlog. And speaking of screen, it is a panel 3-inch, approximately 921.000k-dot touch LCD. On the upper profile, however, the button to start video recording is clearly evident, a clear sign of how important this aspect is at Sony. The multi-interface shoe is also equipped with a new digital audio interface, which allows you to connect a shotgun microphone or an adapter kit such as the XLR-K3M.

There is no shortage of Wi-Fi connectivity to simplify the workflow (the 5Ghz standard is also supported) and there is a USB-C socket for quick cable transfer or even to recharge the battery. NP-FZ100. By the way, the battery is guaranteed up to a maximum of 740 photographs.

New FE 28-60mm f / 4-5,6 lens

Sony A7C is not the only news of the day. Together with the new full-frame mirrorless, the small FE 28-60mm f / 4-5,6 lens was also presented, which represents the ideal companion to the A7C due to its very small size. It is a new optic that can count on three aspherical elements inside for the correction of aberrations. The minimum focusing distance is instead of only 30cm in wide-angle mode and 45mm at the maximum focal range.

Equipped with a retractable design, this new lens certainly guarantees excellent compactness, ideal for always being mounted on Sony A7C almost without realizing it. The weight is in fact only 167 grams which added to those of the camera body bring us to a total of just 676 grams. Sony's new FE 28-60mm ensures fast and quiet autofocus thanks to its linear motor which also leaves the body length unchanged.

That's not all, because in fact there is also a third novelty to talk about. The new flash HVL-F28RM, a compact unit that guarantees reliable light output and optimized light distribution. Among the various functions this new flash is equipped with Sony controls related to the face detection technology present on the cameras. The system is therefore able to automatically measure the balance between the light reflecting on the subject's face and the ambient lighting, adjusting the white balance accordingly to offer a natural rendering of the complexion.
