Test the Sonnet Fusion Flex J3i with the Mac Pro

Test the Sonnet Fusion Flex J3i with the Mac Pro

Sonnet announced earlier this year the launch of the Fusion Flex J3i internal hard drive enclosure, designed so that users can add up to three SATA drives to the 2019 Mac Pro.

MacRumors has posted a video on YouTube showing how the Fusion Flex J3i works.

Fusion Flex J3i is a case that allows you to use up to 36TB of additional storage on ‌Mac Pro‌. When purchased from Apple, the Mac Pro‌ allows for a maximum of 8TB of storage, so adding Sonnet allows for a huge increase in storage capacity. The memory mounted on the Fusion Flex J3i cannot function as a startup disk, but will appear as an external disk connected to the Mac.

Fusion Flex J3i comes without discs, as it is a simple mounting system. Fusion Flex J3i supports two 3,5-inch drives and one 2,5-inch SSD or three 2,5-inch SSDs.

In the video they use two 3,5-inch 4TB drives made by Western Digital and the setup looks simple. Only four screws secure each hard drive to the J3i once the SSD brackets are removed.

Once the Fusion Flex J3i is equipped with the SSDs or mechanical hard drives, it only takes a few minutes to install and run on the ‌Mac Pro‌. Remove the cover, unscrew the top plate and insert the J3i into the machine.

Hard drives connect to the Mac Pro via the three SATA cables included in the J3i, and since the Mac Pro‌ has connectors marked 1, 2, and 3, it's easy to understand what's going on in each location. Once the case is in place, the Mac Pro‌ closes, boots, and everything should work fine.

According to MacRumors, the Fusion Flex J3i is a convenient plug-and-play solution for anyone who needs to add additional storage to their Mac Pro‌, as well as being affordable.

Sonnet's Fusion Flex J3i can be purchased on their website for $ 199, although it is currently out of stock.
