The new generation of consoles has been out for a few months now and, in addition to many new video games coming, also several Playstation 4 and Xbox One titles have received new lifeblood through free or paid updates for PS5 and Xbox Series X. Let's find out which video games are with next-gen updates.
Backward compatibility and updating: what changes?
The first thing to keep in mind of Playstation 5 e Xbox Series X is that both consoles support the backwards compatibility function towards the majority of last generation video games (only a handful of titles were excluded). Just insert the game disc into the console or start its digital version to be able to play exactly as you did on Ps4 and Xbox One.
Not surprisingly, that all old gen titles run better on new consoles, with reduced loads and an improved frame rate. However, several software houses have taken the opportunity to improve their product, bypassing the technical limitations they had to undergo during the last generation. These improvements take the form of updates, which optimize video games from a technical point of view.
There is no common practice on what to include in these updates, but until now the developers have focused onincreased framerate to 60 fps, to ensure greater fluidity in gameplay, and theintroduction of HDR, a rendering technique that allows you to view a wide range of more vivid colors and blacks that are perceived by the human eye as being deeper.
In addition to these two improvements, games upgraded to Ps5 and Xbox Series usually enjoy one 4K resolution and improved textures for game backdrops.
As we said at the beginning, however, not all studies have implemented all of these features: many have rather decided to focus on specific aspects, such as increasing the framerate against the implementation of improved textures, for example.
The sure thing is that many titles are so much improved by these updates that they feel completely different, pad in hand. One of the most emblematic examples in this sense is Devil May Cry V, which in addition to enjoying a stellar technical sector, also uses ray tracing technology, which allows you to simulate real lighting by producing reflections, shadows and refractions.
Which games have a next-gen update?
The commitment of resources and work required to update a video game for the next-gen is considerable, if we consider all the improvements that can be made. For this reason, not all developers have decided to distribute these updates for free: some have even distributed a new edition of the product, complete with an update for the new consoles.

Video games that require the purchase of a specific edition or the payment of a surcharge for the update are:
- Control (Updates only with the Ultimate Edition)
- Devil May Cry V (Updates only with the Special Edition)
- Call of Duty: Cold War (next gen version costs € 10 more)
- MBA 2K21 (Only the Mamba Forever edition is upgraded for free)
- Hitman 3 (Only the digital edition is updated for free)
- FIFA 21 (Free update available up to FIFA 22)
- MADDEN NFL 21 (Free upgrade available up to MADDEN NFL 22)
Alongside these titles, the exclusive incoming cross-gen Ps5s, that is playable on both Ps4 and Ps5, will also enjoy a free update, if you change consoles after purchasing them, in this case we are talking about Horizon forbidden west, Spider-Man Miles Morales, Sack Boy a Big Adventure e Kena: Bridge of Spirits.
The same reasoning applies to recent and future Xbox exclusives, in this case we're talking about The Ascent, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, Fable 4The Medium, Halo Infinite, Call of the sea e Chorus.
