Mortal Shell: 10 tips and tricks to help you survive Beginner's Guide

In, you play as a strange ghost resembling a corpse that inhabits the "shells" of fallen warriors. There are four of these shells in the game, and each has their own strengths and weaknesses. In addition to the shells, you also have a unique Harden mechanism that works as a shield. Instead of blocking, your body turns to stone. You'll also find a parade, a series of unlockable weapons, and a very different leveling system.

This is all part of what makes it special. Check out the full list of tips below to get your bearings and start making your way through the spooky world of Fallgrim.

Mortal Shell: 10 tips and tricks to help you survive Beginner's Guide

    # 1: learn to abuse hardening

Harden is one of your most important skills in. Taking[[L2] you will immediately become invulnerable to most attacks. Physical attacks will eventually break your Hardened state, but you activate it anytime. Even mid-attack or mid-dodge! The ability is on cooldown, but you can use it as often as you like. The recharge timer is quite short.

To get the most out of Harden, get into a fight and keep swinging. You can press [[L2] harden, then stagger an enemy when it hits your hard shell. Get out immediately and continue the attack! Remember that your stamina and current animation are interrupted during Harden, but not canceled. Later, you'll unlock abilities that can speed up stamina recharge while being hardened.

    # 2: restore health with parry

Parry is the first ability you'll unlock in the game after speaking with the Old Prisoner at Fallgrim Tower. Go upstairs and interact with the chain at the top of the stairs to earn the Seal tarnished. When this gadget shines behind your back, press [[L1] to counter attacks. When an enemy attack is countered, they remain vulnerable - for a brief moment, a red glow appears.

hurry[[R1]or[[R2] to counterattack. This is a deadly attack that will instantly kill most early game targets and regain your HP. You need to earn Resolve Points - you'll only spend one Resolve if you pass the parry. Just be prepared to press [[R1] or you will lose your chance for a big attack.

    # 3: look for regrowth fungi

Take note of all Wellcap places as you explore. These precious spots don't just produce a single healing item - they produce an endless amount! You can return to these sites and restock whenever you return to an area. And there are a lot of these places all around Fallgrim and the tower.

You can restock your Wellcaps whenever you leave the tower. One grows to the right of the boss monster cave, and you will always get x2 if you return to the entrance to Fallgrim where you first appeared. Typically, you'll find a Wellcap x2 spawn near the start of an area.

    # 4: Don't know what to do next?

In the Fallgrim Tower, the large hill in the center of the map, you will find several " Instinct of the senses'points. These will give you a clue on the location of the weapons or shells. Explore the world carefully and take note of these areas.

There are three main directions, each leading to a different loading screen. All three branches are accessible in any order, and none seem particularly more difficult than the others. They are all different - but if you have to choose, first walk through Grisha Cave towards the temple grounds.

    # 5: you can heal completely twice per death

In, you automatically get a second chance at life. Every time you get killed you are kicked out of your shell and given the option to reenter. If you die a second time in your shell, you are truly dead and sent back to Fallgrim Tower. In a way, leaving your shell to recover is a blessing because you will two chances to heal completely.

You will heal completely if you are killed, and remember your shell - and you will be completely healed if you locate your former place of death and remember the lost tar. The only punishment for dying is lose tar, but you'll want to keep a lot of it for upgrades. You won't lose Glimpse unless you use the teleport mask.

You can make the patterns a little easier by die tactically, then grab your body when you run out of HP in their arena.

    # 6: How to heal poison effects and unlock new item uses

Found these Mushrooms tarspore? Use them once poisons you, but use them twice unlocks a special effect - you will win immunity with full knowledge, providing anti-poison protection for 120 seconds. There are more articles like this, so go ahead and use each article you find as much as possible.

For example, using the Wellcap 10 times will increase familiarity, causing you to heal faster.

    # 7: sometimes running is better than fighting

The fight is not always worth it. You'll encounter the same groups of enemies over and over again - if you've pretty much explored the area, ignore them! Go through there. They won't follow you for long, and you can tactically use cave holes to completely escape anyone chasing you.

Most enemies don't yield enough tar to be useful for farming, so if you have enough of an area, run straight. Especially useful once you know where to go. If you are near a loading screen? Ignore the bad guys and go straight through!

    # 8: Earn the smoldering mass in the temple grounds

le Mass fumante is one of the first optional weapons you can acquire. To get it, enter the boss Grisha arena in front of the Fallgrim Tower gate. Ignore the boss and run to the hole in the back. Crawl through the hole and you will reach a long canyon. You can just run through the enemies, go through the doors and up the stairs.

Just at the start of the Temple grounds, interact with the book (and the Sester for safety) to start a battle against Hadern. If you defeat this boss, you will gain the precious Smoldering Mace. He's pretty tough, so I recommend running into the Monument of Ash and picking up a Weapon + upgrade material of the iron maiden.

    # 9: Swap Builds at Fallgrim Tower

The Fallgrim Tower is your base - and where you can get clues to expand your arsenal of gear. Each time you unlock a new weapon or shell, you will be able to trade freely at Fallgrim Tower. When you trade typos you will leave your overviews behind but keep your current tar.

You can also switch to different shells using consumable effigies. These are rare, so if you run out you can always head back to Fallgrim Tower and change your stuff. Weapons are permanent and finding weapon upgrades should be your top priority. Look everywhere to unlock them!

    # 10: make your game even more independent

Don't think is Indie enough? Activate "Independent mode" to add a pixelated filter on everything. The real one now starts when playing in semi-pixel graphics mode. Take a look at the high definition in these screenshots!

To activate it, go to the Settings menu and go to Video settings. It's a hilarious little mode, but it probably won't help you beat the game any faster.
